Welcome to the Cody Unser First Step Foundation!

The Cody Unser First Step Foundation

In October 1999, paperwork was finalized establishing the Cody Unser First Step Foundation, a New Mexico not-for-profit corporation aimed at raising research funds to fight paralysis and to build awareness of Transverse Myelitis.

The foundation was initially funded by the generosity of NASCAR Winston Cup driver Bobby Labonte, who replaced Al Jr. in the 1999 International Race Of Champions (IROC). Al Jr. withdrew from IROC when Cody got sick.

At the end of the season Labonte sent his $60,000 IROC winnings to Unser to help Cody. That check was deposited as the first donation for the Cody Unser First Step Foundation, and Labonte agreed to serve as the foundation’s Honorary Chairman.

Cody Meets Bobby Labonte

Cody had an opportunity to personally thank Bobby Labonte for his contribution when they met for the first time on Saturday, November 6, at Phoenix International Raceway. Labonte arranged for Cody and her family to visit after morning practice.

Mission Statement

The Cody Unser First Step Foundation is a global not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising research funds, public awareness and quality of life for those afflicted with all forms of spinal cord-related paralysis. The Foundation will also address the cause, rehabilitation, prevention and cure for Transverse Myelitis, and freely affiliate with other medical, charitable and corporate entities to achieve these goals.
